Summer Fun in the Car
Making Car Trips Enjoyable
Car trips offer a great time and place to play games to help children learn and practice what they are learning. Here are some fun ways to encourage learning in the car:
Practice counting. Count by one, by two, by five, by ten.
Play games. Play some of the sound games or or a question games like this animal question game. Someone thinks of an animal. The others ask questions for clues about its distinguishing characteristics.
Is it large or small?
Is it warm-blooded?
Does it live on the continent of ____?
Does it live on land or in water?
Does it have scales, fur or feathers?
Does it eat animals or plants?
Give birth to live young?
Does it lay eggs?
The point is to ask questions that get as close as possible to identifying the animal - not to go straight to “Is it a bald eagle?”
Sing. Many adults tend to shy away from singing because we fear that our voices are not pitch perfect. Young children, on the other hand, loved to be exposed to music and appreciate having a singing companion. Find some music that you think your child will enjoy and let your inner Celine Dion come out.
Listen to audio books. When you have to spend a lot of time in the car, audio books can help pass the time, particularly for children five and up. Your local librarian is a great resource to help you to find books that match your child's age and interests.
