SPANISH

Grades K-6

Our Spanish program in Alexandria focuses on communication and culture. Children begin at kindergarten age with songs, games, conversations, and stories. As children get older, they also begin learning the foundations of reading and writing in Spanish. Students at both our Mount Vernon (Aquinas Montessori) and Old Town (Columbus Street) campuses develop a strong appreciation for language and culture as part of their Montessori education.

LATIN

Grades 4-6

Our upper elementary Montessori students in Alexandria begin an exciting adventure through the Keepers of Alexandria Latin Program. These lessons, designed with Montessori schools in mind, use history, philosophy, and Latin translation to explore ancient Alexandria. At our Elementary Montessori program (ages 6–12), students connect language learning with history and critical thinking, preparing them for advanced studies while strengthening their cultural understanding.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Spanish Language Program

  • What does Spanish instruction look like in the Montessori classroom?

At Aquinas & Old Town Montessori in Alexandria, Virginia, children begin Spanish in the Primary program (ages 2½–6) through songs, stories, cultural studies, and everyday vocabulary. Lessons are part of the afternoon classroom routine. In the Elementary years (ages 6–12), instruction expands to include grammar, reading, and writing, giving students a strong foundation in Spanish language acquisition.

  • Are Spanish classes offered during both the Primary (2½–6) and Elementary (6–12) programs?

Yes. Primary students experience Spanish in an enjoyable, hands-on way, while Elementary students deepen their skills with more formal work in grammar, reading, and writing. This gradual increase in complexity supports children’s development and builds confidence as they progress.

  • Who teaches Spanish at Aquinas & Old Town Montessori?

Spanish instruction is led by a native Spanish-speaking teacher who is also trained in Montessori principles. This ensures children hear authentic pronunciation, experience the language in a natural way, and gain a richer understanding of Hispanic culture.

  • Is there a separate fee for Spanish instruction, or is it included in tuition?

Spanish is included as part of our Montessori curriculum. Families do not pay a separate fee—it is considered an essential part of the well-rounded education we provide.
